Satellite internet is a relatively new way to get an internet connection at fast speeds. The dish that attaches to a home’s roof is typically small and not as conspicuous as satellite dishes once were. Usually, satellite internet providers bundle television services and/or phone services together for even greater discounts.

Who Needs Satellite Internet?

Satellite internet plans allow people who live in remote areas to receive an internet connection. This may be their only option, as cable providers often do not service rural areas. Satellite service uses a dish to receive internet feeds, some at speedsup to3 mbps upstream and 12 mbps downstream. One advantage of satellite internet is that it can be set up almost anywhere with a generator or simple battery. In comparison, dial-up service is very slow and difficult to use with today’s graphics.

How Do You Set Up Satellite Internet?

The company that provides the service generally sets up the system, which includes a dish no bigger than three feet around. The installer points the dish toward the equator to catch the signals. Finally, he or she sets up the coaxial cables to your uplink/downlink modem so that your computer can get online and upload/download information. The cost of satellite internet is comparable to DSL. It may be even cheaper if the consumer pairs it with another service, such as television.

Satellite internet is wireless like DSL, so you won’t have to tie up your phone lines or plug anything into your laptop. People enjoy WiFi for its simplicity and convenience, as they can get onto the internet from any room in the house. The days of dial-up service are rapidly fading as cable and satellite internet service providers take over.

What Can You Do With Satellite Internet?

Satellite internet is best used for browsing the web. Here’s one tip: You can actually speed up a satellite internet connection by using a tool like Adblock for Firefox. By blocking advertisements, you are preventing the companies from cache busting your computer.

Satellite Internet for Vehicles

Vehicles like cars, boats and RVs can also receive the internet via satellites. Several car manufacturers now offer this built-in service, or the consumer can purchase the kit separately. These internet connections are fairly fast, as they usually work with 3G and 4G networks. Mobile satellite internet kits are becoming very popular as more people want to use the internet 24/7. The only caveat for drivers is that they need to pay attention to the road and should not try to operate any touchscreens while driving.

Disadvantages of Satellite Internet

Some people complain that satellite internet/television are interrupted by major storms. This cutoff is often temporary, sometimes lasting only a few seconds. Although the initial dish setup can be slightly more expensive than cable service providers, the service and speed are usually very good. People who do a lot of online gaming may need something more stable if they play competitively. Generally, most consumers are very happy with satellite internet providers.

Preparing for plane watching

If you’re tired of watching planes buzzing around your flight radar application without ever seeing what you’re actually looking at then perhaps it’s time to change that.

flight radar application

Plenty of aviation enthusiasts have already made the leap into the great outdoors in an attempt to track down that new Boeing 737 MAX that everyone’s been talking about, or the rival Airbus A320.

Sometimes it’s actually only by going outside can you realise what a marvel the plane tracking technology you hold in your hand is. While it’s one thing to find every detail about a flight – from its flight number, make, model and carrier to its speed and course – you might actually want to see what this bird looks like flying.

Well, if that’s the case then don’t forget the following:

Location

You’re going to want to be as high as possible to get the best view of a plane in flight. Natural hills or the tops of buildings make for the best spots. Just make sure that you’re actually allowed access first!

Viewing from the street isn’t recommended because of cloud cover, distractions from others, and the lack of ability to sit and wait in peace.

Comfort

If you’re in for the long-haul – no pun intended – then brings a comfy fold-down chair and a blanket. An umbrella is also recommended for those damp and unpredictable days.

Hats and gloves might also be a good idea in winter, while sunglasses are always recommended when the sun is visible and high in the sky – you don’t want to blind yourself for the sake of your hobby.

Supplies

Bring plenty of snacks, binoculars, possibly a book and most importantly your smartphone with the plane finder application on it! You wouldn’t want to have to memorise the schedule of every flight you wish to capture. Even if you did, there’s a chance of diversions, cancellations and delays; all of which only your app can really help you with.

Finally, you might want to consider bringing a zoom-lens camera to capture all of your sightings on it! Using a digital you could perhaps upload your sightings to a plane forum, start a discussion about your experience and maybe even round up some company next time in doing so!
